EU ambassador addresses Wyoming Legislature

CHEYENNE — The European Union ambassador to the United States believes it is vital to the future of the environment that energy specialists in Europe establish a dialogue with their Wyoming counterparts.

By 2020, the EU has committed itself to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 20 percent below the 1990 level.

Comments sought on drilling near Rock Springs, Montana

CASPER – The Bureau of Land Management is seeking public comments on a proposal by Encana Oil & Gas to drill 85 new natural-gas wells adjacent to the Jonah Field in western Wyoming.

The new production area would be about 70 miles northwest of Rock Springs, with an average density of one well per 80 acres and a maximum density of one well per 40 acres, the BLM said. The project would also include support facilities such as access roads, pipelines and compressor stations.

Highwood coal plant air permit invalid, groups say

HELENA — Two environmental groups said Thursday that the state air-quality permit for the proposed coal-fired Highwood Generating Station is invalid in light of a recent federal court ruling and must be redone.

In a letter to Montana Department of Environmental Quality Director Richard Opper, the groups said that because the Highwood plant’s permit does not comply with the federal Clean Air Act’s mercury emission requirements, construction of the plant cannot lawfully begin.

Ottawa has a tar sands mess on its hands

Canadians are becoming familiar with the scale of destruction in the tar sands, something that First Nations of the region have known for some time now.
And people around the world are learning why our country has taken such an obstructionist role on global warming. Canada and the Bush administration stand alone against the rest of the world because with the tar sands we are housing the single most destructive project anywhere on Earth, and the Americans are getting the oil.

Industry Members Endorse Slowdown on Oil Sands Development of Parts of Athabasca Region

The proposal asked the Alberta government to hold off on creating any new projects within three regions of environmental significance and little oil until January of 2011.
The Sustainable Ecosystem Working Group (SEWG), part of CEMA, is designing a system of land management and will submit it to the Alberta government in June 2008. A moratorium until January 2011, said Hobbs, would allow time for CEMA and the Alberta government to work out the final details of the new system before looking at developing these three regions.

Canadian oilsands boom zooms ahead

CALGARY – Investment in Alberta’s oilsands will skyrocket to nearly $20 billion in 2008, topping spending for all manufacturing across Canada for the first time, says a report issued Wednesday that re-ignited debate about whether Alberta’s oilsands development is hurtling out of control.

Wyoming issues ozone warning: due to oil and gas industry

LANDER — Elevated levels of a potentially toxic air pollutant in the Pinedale region prompted the Department of Environmental Quality to issue an air pollution advisory Wednesday.

Relatively high levels of ozone, a noxious gas and respiratory irritant, have been recorded by DEQ monitors at Boulder, Daniel and at the Jonah natural gas field this past week.
